RRI Online Annual Report

VISUAL DESIGN | USER INTERFACE

Original concept, designs and implementation including all production work for the Rights & Resources Initiative 2013-2014 Annual review.

The challenge for this project was to take the text-heavy annual review and create an attractive and intuitive desktop experience that let the content take center stage. It was important to the client that the user be able to quickly access not only the main sections, but details such as callouts, sub-headers, and figures. With often lengthy titles, the task became making all of the information accessible, while keeping the visual experience as clean and focused on the content as possible.

For my solution, I simplified the sitelet’s navigation to a linear trail of dots, allowing users to track where they are withinin the annual review, while also affording access to smaller details such as callouts and sub-headers from anywhere within the content. The stripped down navigation reveals the full titles of each demarcated section upon hover.

In addition, the design utilizes large background photography of the world’s forests that shifts vertically as the user scrolls through the text, creating a subtle parallax effect that helps the user feel like they're making progress as they move through the content. Tool tips are deployed throughout, allowing us to include citations directly within the flow of the text.
