The Book
The conceptual core of the project was creating a set of components that could be used in a variety of ways and customized for each application. My book cover designs consist of two die-cut shipboard cover sheets, bound together with a spine of black Fibermark Touché cover stock that could be trimmed to any length, and finished with screw posts. This customizable spine element allowed the size of the book to remain flexible to accommodate a variety of applications, while allowing the book to be disassembled and reused multiple times. Additionally, the materials and method of construction give the book a custom, yet unvarnished industrial feel that complimented the company’s character.
The Wrap
SSF had the idea of creating branded wraps for their blueprint and construction plan documents as part of the presentational package. Looking to extend the functionality of one element across multiple applications, I designed a poster that could stand alone as an internal piece of brand art to display in their offices, that when cut into 3 sections, functioned as the document wraps. I sought to further reduce waste from the deliverable through a single-ink design and the use of FTC certified recycled paper .
Finally, inspired by the origami animation my coworker Allen Lau and I had created for the SSF website, we researched a method of creating an envelope from the folded poster that could serve as a wrapper for the presentation book itself.
A Flexible Document
The interior document, which constituted the primary content of the proposals, sometimes consisting of an introduction to the company and a few project samples, other times an extensive RFP with full project specifications. Based on conversations with the client and their pre-existing proposal materials, I designed a series of pre-formatted templates that could be applied or omitted at will, providing maximum flexibility for variable content. Continuing the theme of flexibility and reuse, we created a a custom folder that could carry documents, business cards, and disc media for the most streamlined proposals, which could also be cut down the spine and used as the front and back covers of a more extensive wire-o proposal. In this way, the same set of materials could be deployed for a 10 page presentation, or a 100+ page RFP.
Stickers
In addition to the primary components of the presentation book, I designed a set of custom stickers, printed on ink-jet safe paper that could utilized by SSF’s office printers, as labels for project book submissions, as well as a series of standalone brand stickers that could be used to seal the folded wrap envelope.
